6 ways to stop shoes from smelling!
Some peoples shoes smell.
But don’t feel bad…it’s not you, or your feet…it’s bacteria!
But before we get to the reason why bacteria causes foot odour, it is really interesting to know how the bacteria gets on your feet to make them smell in the first place…and sweat is the culprit.
There are two types of sweat glands…
– Apocrine glands are found near hair follicles and result in response to stresses.
– Eccrine glands are located in the skin all over your body, including your feet. This sweat is intended to cool you down.
Neither type of sweat smells when it is produced.
But…when sweat and damp, dark environments mix, moisture is retained to a certain degree and the odour is the byproduct of bacteria on your skin digesting the sweat. Nice aye…
Each foot contain about 250,000 sweat glands, which can produce as much as 1 cup of moisture a day. That means your feet produce more sweat than any other part of your body – creating potentially more bacteria causing odour!
Even a person who regularly washes their feet can get stinky feet – as the bacteria can transfer from your shoes to your feet if you don’t wear socks.
6 ways to prevent smelly shoes!
TIP 1 – CLEAN YOUR SHOES
If you can, wash your shoes in the washing machine, with about 10-20 drops of Tea Tree Oil. I just pop them in a bra bag, and in with the rest of the load. If you cant machine wash your shoes, thoroughly clean the inside with either straight Tea Tree Oil, or Metho diluted with your favourite Essential Oil.
TIP 2 – ALLOW YOUR SHOES TO DRY IN THE SUN
As soon as you have cleaned your shoes, leave them in the sun to dry all day.
TIP 3 – ABSORB ANY REMAINING MOISTURE
Just to be sure you have absorbed all the moisture, fill a sock or stocking with either kitty litter, or bi-carb and leave overnight.
TIP 4 -FREEZE THEM!
If the above three still have not removed the odour, put your shoes in a large zip lock bag and leave in the freezer for at least 12 hours, and then repeat steps two and three.
TIP 5 – GIVE THEM AIR!
Always allow your shoes to thoroughly air dry before you store them. And if you have especially sweaty feet, repeat steps two and three after each use.
TIP 6 – TREAT YOUR FEET!
After you have removed all that bacteria and smellyness from your shoes, give your feet a soak in warm water, vinegar and your favourite Essential Oil to make sure you don’t transfer any bacteria back to your clean shoes.
