So you have FINALLY found the time to vacuum AND MOP…and now that the floors have dried…they are streaky!!

I cant sympathise enough how demoralizing it is to see streak marks, dried water marks and general splodgy floors after all that effort…

So here are my fool proof, failsafe tips to prevent splodgy floors!!

Mop and Bucket

THE MOP AND BUCKET…
I have found it is the actual Mop and Bucket that makes the difference to beautifully clean floors. Good quality mop heads last forever. I use a commercial cleaning mop head. They are bigger and heavier. The handle that goes with them is much longer and easier to use once you get the hang of it, as opposed to the ones from the Supermarket. I also use one of those buckets you step onto a pedal to wring out the water. If your mop is wrung out well, you get less streaks, and the floor will dry quickly. It is harder work, as you kinda have to scrub the floor with the mop. Another little tip… – I have found if you twirl the mop, so that when it lands on the floor the mop is spread out in a circular pattern, it makes the job easier. Flex your stomach muscles when you mop, so you don’t get a sore back.

I call this method of mopping ‘Dry Mopping’. It is also much better for your wood floors, as too much water can warp the boards over time. This mop head, handle and bucket is available from Bunnings.

THE WATER…
Always use HOT water – the hotter the better, as it helps the floors dry quicker – meaning less streaks. As soon as the water gets dirty, or cool, change it.

THE PRODUCT…
As far as the products…I use about 1-2ml of Neatspiration Lemon Oil, with a big splash of Vinegar. You can use any Neatspiration Essential Oil depending on your mood. Lemon Oil is totally safe for all flooring types and is also antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, an antiseptic and a disinfectant. Lemon Oil is also an odour neutralizer, meaning it does not mask odours, but eliminates them, by killing the germs that create them.

There are some products on the market that contain a polish. Sure they make the floor really beautiful, but you do have to strip them regularly with another product or they get really dull, and do it all again…So I prefer a product with no polish.

THE METHOD…
If you have wood floors, always mop with the grain. Mopping across the grain or in a circular motion can leave streaks.

MAINTENANCE…
A dirty mop also causes streaks, so when you are done, don’t just let your mop dry out after each use. Straight away, put it in a Bra Bag, and wash in the washing machine, then hang to dry in the sun, and it will stay in really great condition for ages:)
